2024 - Wife/Husband Teams win all the Great 48 Races!

Published 7:02pm on 6 May 2024

I imagine this has happened before, but we had different couples win every race this year. With 30 boats registered for the 2024 Great 48, we felt pretty lucky by the end of the regatta. Saturday's forecast was spot on with thunderstorms, lightning, rain, and not much breeze so we didn't get any racing in. It was a great opportunity to hang out and socialize with our Flying Scot family. The regatta organizers fed the group well the whole weekend, and the taps were flowing with three different flavors of beer.

On Sunday the forecast was again for rain, but we got lucky and didn't see any. The forecast, clouds, and a 9am start time, kept all the power boats off the lake so we had flat water and 5 to 8mph of breeze out of the NNW. The conditions felt very similar to one of the last days of the 2023 NAC @ LNYC. The first race ended up being the shortest at 30 minutes with BJ and his wife Emily Jones winning. Race 2 saw a 60 degree wind shift to the left during the first windward beat. Even with this wind shift the race was still 48 minutes, with Ben and his wife Deb Aronson winning. After resetting the course, the RC ran race 3. It was very tactical with John Clark getting to the 1st windward mark 1st, but in the end Dave and his wife Kathy Rink won.

With scores of 1,2,3 Dave and Kathy won overall. Ryan Malmgren and his crew Rick Wojnar sailed consistently and finished 2nd overall (but without Stacey he wasn't allowed to win a race). Big Thanks to Bill Migirditch and Tim Ponter for running a great event.  Also a big thanks to our PRO, Ken Gorni and team for some great races on Sunday.
