Sunfish Sailing Clinic (Limited)

17th August, 11:00am - 3:00pm

We are planning another Sunfish clinic - please email adultsailing@lnyc.org for more information.

The Sunfish Clinic at Lake Norman Yacht Club will provide capable new adult sailors with an introduction to this very popular sailboat - the Sunfish.  Many of what we will cover can translate to the many "sunfish clones" out there such as the Phantom, Aqua-Fin, SOL, or any other single-handed light sailing dinghy such as a Laser.  The clinic will be open to adults 18 or older.  Although new sailors are welcome, they should have some familiarity with sailing.  The student should also be physically able to sail a Sunfish and be able to right and climb back into a capsized Sunfish.

The Sunfish Clinic will be held on Saturday, August 17th, at 11:00 AM at the LNYC Picnic Pavilion.  We will hold a rain/weather date for the following week (August 24th) in the event of inclement weather or lack of wind.  The cost will only be $25.

The clinic will involve a short discussion on rigging the Sunfish, launching from a beach or dock, sailing up and downwind, capsize recovery, and returning to the beach/dock.  We will then assign you a boat that you will rig (with assistance of course!) will go out for a sail (1.5 to 2 hours is planned).  Upon returning, we will de-rig the boats and have a debrief.  Please bring a lunch/snack and something to drink during the debrief.

Due to the limited number of club-owned Sunfish available, this class will be restricted to 10 entries only.  We may expand this if additional boats can be added from our private fleet.  However, we will have a wait list.  If you do sign up and cannot make it, please do so at least 48 hours prior so we can issue you a refund and take the next person off the list.

Wear a bathing suit and clothing that can get wet.  We recommend closed-toed shoes that you don't mind getting wet too (e.g. water shoes).  You should also bring water to drink, sunscreen and life jacket.  If you do not have a life jacket, we can provide one for you (please let me know ahead of time).
