2023 Flying Scot Fall 48 Results

Published 5:09pm on 7 Nov 2023

The Fall 48 started with a cool Friday night dipping into the 30s, but the firepit and the wide variety of homemade chillis made for a cozy evening at the clubhouse.   We had 25 boats registered and crews from 7 different states.  We were all pleasantly surprised when Saturdays forecast for no wind was wrong.  Great breeze during the skippers meeting sent the boats out to the race course.  After a short postponement, the wind filled in from the east at 3 to 5mph.  We had flat water, sunny skies and temps in the low 70s so we got a race started.  Carol Sandke and crew Treez Decker got to the weather mark first, but shortly after the wind shifted right almost 90 degrees.  The race was shortened to 2 legs and John Wake and Tom Lawton won race #1.

After adjusting the course for a southerly breeze at 4 to 6mph, we got race 2 started.   Dan Neff and his daughter Ella got to the windward mark first, followed closely by the ODonnells and the Porters.   There was a huge gap between those 3 boats and the rest of the fleet, so they duked it out with Sean and his son Hogan ODonnell winning race #2.  The breeze held steady for the 3rd race.  Dave Rink and Joel Blade got a perfect boat end start and won race #3.

The Dark and Stormys got the teams ready to watch some great drone videos of all 3 races by LNYC member CJ Lacour.  Well put those on YouTube at some point.  Sunday started out with promising wind on the water and a building breeze in the forecast.  With sunny skies and forecasted highs in the 70s the teams headed out.  After a general recall and one more failed start attempt, the wind completely died and we didnt get any races in.   Dave Rink and Joel Blade squeaked out a 1 point victory over Sean ODonnell and his son Hogan.  Full results listed here: Fall 48 Race Results

A huge thanks to Brian Phillips and his wife Elizabeth for running a great Flying Scot regatta in their first year of owning a Scot!  Our PRO, BJ Jones and his RC crew ran some great races in challenging conditions.
